Fillings can fail and often times they do. Fillings can fall out, crack and are prone to secondary cavities, which is beneath the filling. Large fillings do not last forever and when your teeth are excavated and filled numerous times there is no choice other than removing the tooth or placing a crown on that tooth.
A tooth with a large deteriorating filling if left untreated may break down to the point that a crown would not be an option. This means tooth lose.
